Common Tools

Some of the tools used in photoshop should be familiar incase you have worked with Adobe Illustrator before.
The Tools Panel is located at the left hand side of the Workspace.

SELECTION TOOLS

I've gone ahead and place an image in my document  by going to File>Place and selecting the image i would like to use:

(select your image)
(placed image)

(It is better to place images rather than drag and dropping into photoshop
because placed images are imported as smart objects that can be resized without losing original
quality as long as their original size is not exceeded)

The Pen Tool:

The pen tool is used to draw paths that can be used to make selection, strokes and other functions that depends on your creativity

Using the pen tool
Click on the pen tool icon to select it or press "P" on your keyboard to activate the pen tool:

Drawing paths with the pen tool is done by clicking on the canvas on different part of the paper which creates anchor points.

Drawing a path around a portion of the image and then right clicking and selecting make selection, make a selection of the image according to the drawn path.

 (draw the path)

(right click and select "make selection")

 (enter your prefferred settings)

(Path is now a selection)

right click and select fill, this will allow you to fill the selection with either the the foreground colour. i have filled my selection with a dark blue
